Worldlines

WORLDLINES
What are Worldlines?

Worldlines are the in-universe name for a character's home setting. From the perspective of the characters, Worldlines are parallel universes with radical differences, operating on entirely different rules and logic from each other. One character might come from an entirely mundane Worldline without any magic or paranormal elements and another might come from a Worldline where ghosts, ghouls and goblins are part of every day life. Typically, Worldlines do not cross over or interact with each or, nor is it usually possible for people to view or cross over to other Worldlines – the technology of Lumen Omega is an exception in this regard.

From an OOC perspective, Worldlines are essentially individual genres and stories.

Hold up, you said this wasn't a fourth wall thing!

It's not, I promise. 'Genre' and 'stories' are just the most direct words to get across the general Vibe to shoot for when constructing a character's Worldline. Just as genres and stories each operate on their own unique logic, so too do Worldlines – a magical girl story might have the day saved by the power of love and friendship, but a horror story relying on those same ideas would probably come to a bloody end.

Since WorldExo is at least partially about recreating the fun of unusual crosscanon CR with purely OCs, players are encouraged to lean heavily on genre and existing canon pastiche when whipping up a character or a Worldline for WorldExo.

So how do I create a Worldline?

It's pretty simple! A Worldline is a character's home setting, so if you have a character written up then you probably already have the bones of a good Worldline ready to go. Once you have all the rest settled, you will need to decide on some additional things: Influence and Aspects.

Influence is just a list of genre and canon inspirations that make up your Worldline. If you're trying to get across a particular Vibe, this is where you lay it out in plain terms to communicate exactly what feel your Worldline has.

Aspects are a little more complicated. In short, these are the rules or logic that your Worldline operates on, potentially unique from its Influence. A Worldline's Aspects may also have knock-on effects on a character and the way they interact with other Worldlines – but since Aspects are such a large part of gameplay, they have their own page here that you should check out.

Do all Worldlines have Aspects?
Yes, they do. However, not all will be immediately obvious – part of the investigation into each new Worldline will have a sort of subquest of deducing the Aspects of each world, therefore identifying its internal logic and how best to resolve whatever issue is at hand.

Alpha Principia Locations

LX-TERMINUS
LX-Terminus is a dwarf planet on which the Lumen Omega Research Base is stationed. It bears signs of having once been lightly terraformed for human use – grass grows sparsely here and there and the asteroid is wrapped in an artificial atmosphere maintained by the Lumen Omega base. It clocks in at around 3600km in diameter – just a bit larger than Earth's Moon – and has gravity a little bit weaker than Earth's, though not enough that it would interfere with day to day life in the planet.

It has an Earth-like sky that is typically cloudless and a shade of very pale blue that verges on lavender. It has two suns that rise simultaneously from opposite ends of the planet and overlap in the sky at precisely midday. A full day on LX-Terminus lasts 30 hours, though the planet is only illuminated by its suns for a total sixteen and a half hours with sunrise at exactly 6:30AM and sunset at exactly 12PM. Because of this, midnight and midday fall on hour 15. Aside from this, it follows an Earth-like routine of seven day weeks and four week months.

Weather and climate wise, LX-Terminus is typically refreshingly chilly and damp, with an average temperature of around 18 to 22 degrees (64 to 71F) though on particularly hot days it can rise to 30 to 35 degrees (90 to 90F). It rains more often than it doesn't, typically with light and infrequent showers during the day though much heavier, full-day showers will usually occur at least once or twice a week. Dry days are infrequent though not completely rare and tend to be much hotter than days without rain.

Aside from the Lumen Omega base, no other structures or human settlements are visible on LX-Terminus.
LUMEN OMEGA RESEARCH BASE
The Lumen Omega Research Base is, you guessed it, a research base once used to research and catalogue other Worldlines, though now it stands unoccupied... or mostly unoccupied, anyway. It sits in a wide, flat plane of grass with a sizable artificial lake just to the north of the building and a small garden to the west.

Rather than a single building, Lumen Omega is a cluster of interconnected hexagonal structures with two three-storey buildings flanking a single-storey building in the center. From right to left, these are the residential halls, the entrance hall and an under construction building. Currently, only the entrance and residential hall are available to access as well as the outdoor areas, including a small greenhouse attached to the residential hall.

Inside, the base resembles an observatory more than anything else. Most of the residential areas have been refurbished to be a bit more homely with dark, soft carpets and cream walls but it's not too difficult to find unfinished rooms and hallways with bare metal walls, cold cement floors and flat, white lighting.

Each individual structure has its own outer door, but entering the largest structure from the southern door gives access to the main hub of the base and all other areas from inside.

Premise & FAQ

PREMISE
Greetings, Traveller.

We welcome you to the Lumen Omega Research Facility, located in Worldline Alpha Principia. We hope that your journey here was a pleasant one.

You stand as the representative of your home Worldline and with it, you have been presented the opportunity to save it from immanent destruction. Though frozen in peaceful ignorance now, we have calculated that it will take a period of no longer than two years for their destruction to become irreversible. Interruptions and irregularities threaten the stability of all Worldlines and after approximately six hundred thousand simulations and calculations, we have concluded that you – all of you – are our best hope to reclaim our futures from those who would wish to see them consumed by darkness.

Though the road ahead may be long and perilous, believe in yourselves and the bonds you form with your fellow travellers and we will be certain to achieve victory.

After all, what other choice do you have?
BASICS
What is World End Exodus?
World End Exodus is a short-term, private game DMed by [plurk.com profile] superorbital and open to players on my timeline. It is one part short term game and one part experiment in running TTRPG systems using DWRP as the game medium.

Inspired by the likes of Live a Live and Re:Creators, characters are drawn from their home Worldlines to pool their strengths and attempt to identify and combat the irregularities that threaten to doom them all. The game will operate on a alternating downtime/mission schedule during which characters dive into disrupted Worldline and use their unique skills to resolve the issues therein.

The game is run on a stripped down, DWRP friendly version of Fate Accelerated and while pre-existing familiarity with the system is not a requirement, players are encouraged to at least give it a once over to get comfortable with the systems and terminology.

When is World End Exodus?
There is no solid start date as of yet, but the game is anticipated to launch in late 2022/early 2023 and to run for six months to one year at the most.

You mentioned these canons but I don't know anything about them!
No worries! WorldExo is an original story with entirely original characters. You don't need pre-existing knowledge of anything to enjoy it.

I DO have familiarity with these canons and I want to know - is this a fourth wall thing? Are there metafictional elements?
Nope! There will be no fourth walling or canon puncturing or "surprise, you're all fictional!" reveals. The influence the game takes from things like Re:Creators is purely a case of Vibes and not straight plot points.

How will World End Exodus run?
The progression of WorldExo is split between downtime and missions. After the intro, the game will operate on a schedule of three weeks of downtime and three weeks of mission time, creating mini-arcs that last six weeks at a time (though these numbers are, of course, subject to change based on the needs of the game).

Characters will spend their downtime in the game's main hub location where they can decompress and interact with each other in a more relaxed environment - downtime is your opportunity to get those social links in!

At the start of the third week of downtime, characters will be informed what Worldline they will be diving into on their next mission and given the opportunity to plan and prepare.

At the start of the fourth week, characters will dive into the Worldline in question. They will spend three weeks there before being returned to the hub regardless of whether they have completed all their mission objectives or not.

For more information, check out the Worldlines & Missions page when they're live.

Uh, you do know what the name of the game spells as an acronym, right?
    Heehee.
RULES & CONSIDERATIONS
Rule Zero
Rule Zero of WorldExo is a lot of things boiled down into one simple phrase: Don't Be An Asshole. While we understand that not all players will always be best friends with each other, we do expect a base level of civility from and for everyone in the game. Treat your fellow players and mods with the same level of courtesy and respect you'd like to receive in return and in instances where you would prefer not to interact with another player, please utilize their opt outs and alert the mods if this becomes a larger issue.

In terms of RP, players are expected to keep basic rules of etiquette in mind and refrain from godmodding, infomodding, blurring IC/OOC boundaries and otherwise avoid making other people's time in the game unpleasant. If players are found to be contributing to an unsafe or unpleasant atmosphere in the game, a warning will be issued and in certain cases of bad behaviour, I reserve the right to act in the interests of the playerbase and issue an outright ban without prior warning.

Players are encouraged to try and resolve small-scale disagreements between themselves, but please don't hesitate to come to the mods if you find yourself in a situation you need some intervention in. We're always here to help!

Expected Content & Warnings
WorldExo is not intended to be a continually grim and gritty experience, nor one that continually strays into disturbing, upsetting or NSFW territory with no breathing room given to players. Due to the nature of the premise, players should expect to encounter themes of mild to moderate existential horror and mild to moderate horror and violence. Logs and events will come with additional content warnings where appropriate and players will never be forced to take part in aspects of the game they might be uncomfortable with.

The nature of a "panfandom" game of this nature also means that there will be potentially disturbing material outside of the above introduced from the game setting from time to time. I do not intend to excessively restrict what players can discuss and play out, but players are expected to appropriately warn when instances of disturbing or upsetting content come up in threads. In short, use your own discretion and basically just be courteous to anyone who might be wanting to avoid discussions of things they may find upsetting.

If you run into any problems in this regard, don’t hesitate to let me know.

Activity and Schedule
Due to the smaller player cap and schedule, I will be a bit stricter on activity this time around compared to previous games I have run.

AC will not be very high but players will be expected to consistently meet it and to engage with the game's story and mechanics. If a player is found to be scraping by on minimal activity, I may choose to have a discussion with them about their spot on the game. If we are at player cap and this situation happens, I reserve the right to remove players from the game and offer the open slot to other players who are interested in WorldExo.

I do not expect to have to enforce this rule and I don't particularly want to! This is just a heads up that, due to the smaller playerbase and the game mechanics, I expect players to be relatively checked in and keeping up with the game.

Timezones & Availability
Because your spicy and delicious head mod lives in England, WorldExo's dates and times run on UK time. All times given for deadlines, event posts, apps, etc will be given in GMT or BST depending on the time of year. If you're from outside of the UK, you can use a website like The Timezone Converter to check what time things land in your area.

APPLYING
Okay, I'm sold! Can I app?
HOLD THAT THOUGHT, BABY! Since WorldExo is a private game, you will need to be on my Plurk list to apply! We also accept plus ones and referrals on a case by case basis at my discretion and in a case where we have minimal slots left and are close to player cap, priority will go to people in my own timeline.

I've got my invite! Who can I app?
WorldExo exclusively accepts original characters. While players are encouraged to create an OC specifically for the game with its systems and mechanics in mind, if they have a pre-existing OC they think would be a good fit for the game, they're free to app them... with a few caveats.

OCs apped to WorldExo must be from original worlds, not pre-existing settings. This means no fandom OCs and no customizable protagonists (WoLs, etc). Characters from tabletop campaigns are, of course, allowed so long as they come from original/homebrew settings.

You are however, encouraged to draw inspiration from these pre-existing canons if you like when creating a character for WorldExo. The keywords are "pastiche" and "homage" so feel free to mix things up and have fun with it!

In addition, WorldExo does not accept:

⚝ Characters without a mostly human level of sapience and/or ability to communicate.
⚝ Characters from stories that are exclusively sexual/pornographic.

Finally, we ask that characters keep overall suitability and appropriateness for the setting and tone of the game in mind when considering potential characters. Player characters who are completely uninterested in taking part in Worldline dives or participating in the metaplot would be a poor fit for the game overall. In addition, characters who are overly abrasive and hellbent on mayhem and shitstirring with no ability to function day-to-day in the game setting will likely be subject to revision requests. Characters intent on bigotry, racism, homophobia, transphobia, misgendendering of trans/nonbinary characters in-game or other such instances of yikes behaviour will not be accepted to WorldExo.

Are there any kinds of character caps?
WorldExo has a player cap of fifteen with each player allowed one character in game at a time. There is also a quasi-franchise cap in that only two characters from the same Worldline can be in game at any given time.

Enough talk! Just tell me how to app!
    Fair enough.

For the game's first app round, there will be a reserve period where players reserve their spot in the game. Once reserve period ends or we hit player cap (whichever comes first), reserves will close and apps will open.

Following that, apps will always be open unless we are at player cap. When applying, just use the appropriate form from the apps page and post it in the comments. Make sure to be very thorough when filling it out as your app will also function as your character sheet for the duration of the game!

Once posted, your app will be processed and you'll receive one of three responses:

Accepted: You got in! Your acceptance form will have some housekeeping for you to do, such as joining the comms and being added to the taken list. Get all that done within the timeframe listed in the acceptance form and you’re ready to go!
Revision Request: Almost, but not quite! Revision requests mean that there’s something about your app that needs fixing before you can start playing. Your revision request will outline what needs fixing and how soon you need to get your revisions in. Once that’s done, you should be good to go!
Rejection: Rejections go out in the event of a character not being an appropriate fit for the game or because there are too many things that need fixing with your app for just a revision request. Generally, reasons for an app rejection will not be publicly disclosed just in the interest of discretion, but players will be free to PM the mod account to receive a fuller explanation as to why Unless directly stated, a rejection does not equal a ban from the game and you are free to submit a fresh app again down the line.

Once your app has been accepted, you're free to post your intro and start playing. Later down the line, an IC FAQ outlining what the arrival process will be like for new characters will be live, so be sure to check that out when it's up!

As a note, while apps are always open, if a mission is currently underway then new characters will not be able to immediately intro into the game. Apps will be processed as usual, but a note will be left on the acceptance notice letting you know what date you can expect to be able to post your intro.

How can I drop from the game? Can I app back if I do?
Simple as pie! We do not have a formal drop page, but if you plan to leave the game, just contact your wonderful and humble head mod (Claire) and let them know. You can hash out what happens to your character at that time, or are also just free to handwave it and not think about it too hard.

If you’re dropped from the game and are now looking to app back, that’s easy too! Comment to the app page with a link to your previous app and some notes on how you would like your character to re-enter the game and once you get a mod response, you're good to go!

PACE, ACTIVITY & HIATUSES
What's the expected schedule and pace of World End Exodus?
WorldExo's activity periods cover one downtime period and one mission period, so a span of time covering about six weeks.
I can't make any promises about the game's eventual pace, but similar games I have run in the past have been slow to medium paced, moving up to medium to fast during events.

How does activity check work in World End Exodus?
On the second to last day of a given activity period, AC will be processed using ACSavior. WorldExo requires players to have at least two threads with separate characters, totalling fifteen comments overall to pass activity check. In addition, players must have at least three comments on the Worldline dive.

On the final day of the activity period, the AC results will be posted and any characters who have failed to meet the activity minimum will be issued a strike.

A strike can be cleared by passing AC the next month with sufficient activity. Failing to pass AC for two months in a row without some manner of discussion with the mods will result in a character being swept from the game. However, players who fail to pass AC more than twice during their time at WorldExo, without discussing with me, will be removed from the game.

What happens if I can't make AC for a month?
As mentioned above, characters who do not meet the AC minimum will be issued a strike. This can easily be cleared the next month, so long as you are sure to tag around. If you fail to clear your strike before the next activity check, your character will be swept from the game.

If there are extenuating circumstances around you not being able to make AC then please speak me and I will do my best to work with you!

I need a break! How do I go on hiatus?
If you need to go on hiatus, simply contact me and let me know that you need a break from the game. Provide an esimate on when you expect to return and you will be given a pass on your activity until your hiatus expires. While on hiatus you are, of course, free to keep playing your character and tag around in WorldExo – if you are totally stepping back from the game for your hiatus period, it will be assumed your character is on autopilot unless other plans are made.

Please note that due to the nature of WorldExo and its schedule, hiatuses can only cover a maxium of one activity period. If you need to take more than one hiatus during your time at WorldExo, these can be granted under exeptional circumstances but due to the low player cap this is not something that will be done on the regular.

If players are found to be taking advantage of the strike and hiatus system to coast by while not meeting activity, they will be removed from the game and asked not to return.
